Iain Percy, great calls in AC Playoffs Final day 1. 10/06/2017 - Bermuda (BDA) - 35th America's Cup Bermuda 2017 - Louis Vuitton America's Cup Challenger Playoffs Finals , Day 1

All in all we are seeing a huge jump forward in sailing broadcasting. The World Cup Final as well as the AC are starting to show sailing well on TV. You’d expect that from the America’s Cup, but also World Sailing is doing a huge job with limited resources and doing well. The show needs refining. We like the winner takes all system, though it requires windy sunny venues.

We have to start thinking a bit like winter sports, you need snow to go skying, well you need breeze to show sailing at his best, and now as historical events are going down, even for some disputable decision on the World Cup, we have the chance to dare and start sailing in Sardinia, South Tuscany, Cesme in Turkey, Valencia in Spain, Cadiz… magic and normally strong wind venues that can give one entire new image to sailing. The old circuit had his merits, though mostly cold and unpleasent weather was the main characteristic, and if we want to dare more at least in the base boats, supplied boats and not bring your own sailed in heats and one inclusive system could really relaunch our magic sport.

Let’s try to keep the good of recent revolutions and add some passionate competence and make World Sailing really world sailing more than british sailing…, let’s include experience from various cultures to make this mix the driving force of a new sailing sport. Still enjoying the british ordered way of doing things, but bringing a bit of creativity and genious in the way we are shaping up our sport for the future.

Talking about characters and the America’s cup, yesterday in my opinion Iain Percy showed why he is one of the greatest and why I thought he could become one of the greatest in the AC. No comparison his presence in comparison with past 49er superstars. He is so focused and determined that he does not even attend the press and send Nathan Outteridge, great loss for sailing as the charisma and aura is completely different. We need the greater, life characters like Percy to be the flag carriers of the values of our sport, and that is why we need a boat so fiscal and brutally demanding like the Finn that naturally selects characters like Percy, the only ones in line with sailing great tradition.

You can love or hate Dennis Conner, Big Bad Dennis is everything else but only a pleasant character, but he was a character and so Coutts and so are Percy and in one other way Ben Ainslie. If we want sailing to grow we need a total re-think and now could be the moment. Let’s hope that World Sailing will use also some international knowledge and increase the cultural depth of the staff, as a one language only organization even working perfectly cannot capture the vaste difference in cultures that have always been the main strenght of sailing.

Tonight we will see ETNZL and Artemis and if none falls out of the cat… well we’ll have fun racing and myself i congratulate hungarian Szombor Berecz for his silver in Santader. He is a phenomenal talent and it has been a great pleasure to help him getting all the way up to have the chance to be the best. Sitting in a nice coauch I will watch a lot of sailing today…
